Viking Helgrim joined the Douro fleet in 2019, built on the same lock-constrained platform as Viking Torgil with a refreshed interior specification.

The layout, capacity and cabin ladder are unchanged; the differences are finishes, lighting and a slightly reworked sun deck.

She runs the same round-trip Porto itineraries, including the Salamanca land extension and the port-house programme in Vila Nova de Gaia.

The Douro is a daytime-cruising river, so the sun deck and the forward lounge get far more use than on a Rhine sailing.

Wine is the through-line ashore: quinta visits, vertical tastings and harvest-season foot-treading demonstrations in September.

    Highlights

    Douro wine programme

Quinta visits, port-house tastings and harvest-season programming.

    Daytime cruising

The Douro is navigated in daylight, so deck space matters more than on the Rhine.

    Later-build interiors

Refreshed finishes over Viking Torgil on the same platform.

    Accommodation

    Cabin types and classes

    Standard stateroom

Lower-deck cabin of around 14 sq m with a half-height fixed window, hotel-style beds and a shower room.

    French Balcony stateroom

Around 15 sq m with a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door and a railed threshold — no step-out floor area.

    Veranda stateroom

Around 19 sq m combining a full step-out balcony with a French balcony in the same room.

    Veranda Suite

Around 26 sq m with a separate sitting area, both balcony types and priority restaurant reservations.

    Explorer Suite

Around 41 sq m across two rooms at the bow, with a wraparound veranda and one and a half bathrooms. Two per Longship.

    Accessible stateroom

Available on selected hulls with wider doorways and a level-access shower; lift access does not reach every deck on all ships.

    The Restaurant

Single main dining room with open seating, no assigned tables and a regional menu alongside always-available classics.

    Aquavit Terrace

Glazed forward lounge serving a lighter breakfast and lunch buffet and a smaller à la carte dinner menu, with a retractable front.

    Early riser and afternoon service

Continental breakfast from 06:00 and afternoon tea with cakes and savouries in the lounge.

    Room service

Available 24 hours at no charge, with a full breakfast menu delivered to the stateroom.

    Speciality restaurants (charged)

    Chef's welcome and farewell dinners

Regional multi-course menus on the first and last nights, included in the fare.

    Local speciality lunches ashore

Included on selected itineraries — a Wachau apricot lunch or a Douro quinta table, arranged as part of the excursion.

There are no cover-charge restaurants anywhere in the river fleet — every venue is included in the fare.

Venue line-up reflects the Viking River Cruises standard; the exact restaurants aboard Viking Helgrim vary with the ship's class and most recent refit.

    On board

    Entertainment

    Resident musician

A pianist or duo playing in the lounge before and after dinner; there is no show band or production theatre.

A resident programme director gives daily port talks and cultural briefings.

    Local performers

Regional musicians, folk ensembles or glassblowers brought aboard for one evening per itinerary.

    Sun deck and quiet spaces

A walking track, herb garden, shaded seating and a small library — the ship is deliberately calm in the evening.

    Bars

    Drinks packages

    Included with meals

House wine, beer and soft drinks are poured at lunch and dinner at no charge.

    Silver Spirits package

All-day package covering spirits, cocktails, premium wines by the glass and speciality coffees, charged per person per day.

Included around the clock at the Aquavit Terrace coffee station.

    Ashore

    Excursions

One guided excursion is included in every port. Optional premium excursions are sold separately and can be pre-booked online before departure, which is advisable on Rhine and Danube sailings where capacity is limited.

    Included walking tour

A guided city or village tour with an audio headset system in every port.

    Optional premium excursions

Concerts, castle dinners, cookery classes and further-afield coach tours, charged separately.

    Working World tours

Behind-the-scenes visits to farms, workshops and manufacturers, included on selected itineraries.

    Privileged Access

Private after-hours or before-opening entry at selected sites, sold as a premium excursion.

    Value

What the fare includes — and what it doesn't

    Included

    • One guided shore excursion in every port
    • All onboard meals in both venues
    • Beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner
    • Speciality coffee and tea around the clock
    • Wi-Fi throughout the ship
    • Port charges and 24-hour room service

    Not included

    • Airfare and transfers unless booked as a Viking Air package
    • Optional premium excursions
    • The Silver Spirits all-day beverage package
    • Gratuities for crew and local guides
    • Laundry outside Explorer Suite grades

    Connectivity

    Wi-Fi at sea

    Technology

    Shore-based 4G and 5G cellular aggregation

    Included in the fare?

Included in the fare for all guests on all sailings, with no tiered packages sold on board.

    Standard Wi-Fi

Browsing, email, messaging and social media for multiple devices per stateroom, included.

    Streaming

Generally workable in urban moorings but unreliable in gorges and rural stretches where cellular coverage drops.

River ships use land-based mobile networks rather than satellite, so signal follows the terrain — expect drops in the Rhine Gorge, the Wachau and the Iron Gates.
