The Viking Longship, introduced in 2012 with Viking Freya, is a patented river-vessel design that solved the two chronic problems of European river cruising: cramped cabins and wasted deck space. The asymmetrical corridor layout freed room for true two-room Explorer Suites at the stern and a full-width Aquavit Terrace at the bow.
More than 80 Longships now operate on the Rhine, Danube, Main, Moselle, Seine, Rhône, Douro, Elbe, and Mississippi, with regionally adapted variants for the Nile, Mekong, and Portuguese waterways. Every vessel carries the same restaurant, lounge, and stateroom hierarchy.
For guests the practical effect matches the ocean fleet: the ship is a constant and the itinerary is the variable. River fares include a guided tour in every port, all onboard meals, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, and Wi-Fi.
