MSC Cruises is the ocean-cruise brand of Switzerland's MSC Group. Headquartered in Geneva and majority Mediterranean-based, MSC operates 22 ocean ships and sits third worldwide by passenger capacity, differentiated by its European design language, multilingual crew, and a genuinely elevated ship-within-ship suite product in the MSC Yacht Club.
About MSC Cruises
MSC Cruises grew out of the Aponte family's acquisition of StarLauro Cruises in 1988 and expanded rapidly from 2003 onwards under a multi-billion-euro newbuild programme. Today it operates 22 ships across five active classes — Lirica, Musica, Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside, and World — with additional World-class ships on order through 2027.
The brand's strategic positioning is contemporary-plus-value: MSC consistently undercuts Royal Caribbean and Carnival on headline fares while investing heavily in newer ships, private island infrastructure (Ocean Cay in the Bahamas), and its Yacht Club enclave, which competes credibly with Celebrity's Retreat and NCL's Haven.
MSC's guest mix is more international than most US-based lines: expect substantial European (Italian, German, French, Spanish) contingents alongside British and North American guests, with announcements typically made in multiple languages. This is a feature, not a bug — the brand is unapologetically European and appeals strongly to travellers who want a Mediterranean or Caribbean cruise that does not feel American-suburban.

Loyalty Programme — MSC Voyagers Club
The MSC Voyagers Club is a five-tier programme (Classic, Silver, Gold, Diamond, Diamond Diamond) earned through both cruise nights and onboard spend. Status is retained for three years from the last qualifying cruise, and MSC operates one of the industry's most aggressive status-match programmes — matching or exceeding tier from most competing lines, including Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor, Celebrity's Captain's Club, and Carnival's VIFP.
Tangible benefits are stronger than most competitors from Gold upwards: complimentary specialty dining, welcome bottles, spa credits, priority embarkation, and — from Diamond — meaningful loyalty discounts on future cruises. For frequent European cruisers the programme repays itself quickly.
Destinations
MSC's core deployment is the Mediterranean — where it is the market leader — supplemented by year-round Caribbean sailings from Miami and Port Canaveral, Northern Europe and the Baltics in summer, and seasonal programmes in Northern Europe, the Middle East (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha), South Africa, and Brazil.
The line's private Bahamian island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, features on virtually every Caribbean itinerary and is one of the more thoughtfully designed private islands afloat — a former industrial sand-mining island rehabilitated as a genuine marine reserve.
