Volendam entered service in November 1999 as an R-class ship. She is HAL's second Grand World Voyage flagship after Rotterdam and Zuiderdam, and operates the annual Grand Africa and Grand South America voyages.
Volendam's small size (1,432 guests) gives her access to South American, African, and South Pacific ports the Pinnacle-class flagships cannot reach. Summer sees her deployed on Canada-New England programmes from Boston.
She retains a more traditional HAL onboard product than the modern flagships but has received Pinnacle Grill and specialty-dining upgrades.
