Private (Virgin Group), with Bain Capital as a joint-venture investor in Virgin Voyages

Virgin Group is Richard Branson's privately held conglomerate, with interests spanning aviation, rail, telecoms, financial services, hospitality and space. Virgin Voyages was launched in 2020 as a joint venture with Bain Capital and is the group's only cruise brand.

The Voyages brief was explicitly contrarian: adults only (18+), no formal nights, no buffet, no photographers, no upcharge main dining, gratuities and Wi-Fi built into the fare, and a fleet of four identical mid-size ships rather than an escalating mega-ship arms race.

In portfolio terms Virgin behaves less like a cruise group and more like a single-brand hospitality operator. There is no ladder of sub-brands, no legacy tonnage to work around, and no repositioning of second-hand hulls — which makes the product unusually consistent across the fleet.
