Viking Holdings Ltd was founded in 1997 by Norwegian executive Torstein Hagen with four river vessels acquired in Russia. It has since become the largest river cruise operator in the world and, since the 2015 launch of Viking Star, a serious force in small-ship ocean cruising. The company listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2024.
Unlike the mass-market groups, Viking operates a single consumer brand across three products — river, ocean, and expedition — rather than a ladder of separately positioned lines. That gives it unusual consistency: the same adults-only (18+) policy, the same Scandinavian design language, the same inclusive fare architecture, and the same destination-first programming whether you are on the Danube, in the Caribbean, or in Antarctica.
For travellers the practical consequence is predictability. Every Viking ocean ship is effectively a sister ship, every river Longship is near-identical, and the onboard product does not change materially between itineraries — which makes Viking one of the easiest operators in the market to book without research.
