Sycamore Partners bought Azamara from Royal Caribbean Group in March 2021 for roughly $201 million, separating the four-ship brand from the corporate ladder it had occupied since 2007.

Standalone ownership changed the brand's economics rather than its product. Azamara kept the R-class hulls, the long port stays, the overnight-heavy itineraries and the AzAmazing Evenings programme, but gained the freedom to price and market independently of a mass-market parent.

The fourth ship, Azamara Onward, was added in 2022 — the first fleet growth in fifteen years and the clearest signal that the private-equity thesis is expansion rather than run-off.
